As a new resident of Chattahoochee, I was kind of amazed that the new library was not a WiFi hotspot. It is improbable to think of a library not including this service in this day and era of internet.

Since wi-fi is offered in thousands of locations across the country, including schools and libraries, what security issues are preventative of such a service here? Common knowledge posits that one needs to be more careful and personally responsbile when using wi-fi as opposed to secure networks. Security, therefore, is the burden of the patron in that case. I agree with nikromatt in that this is a vital service in the 21st century.

From what I have been told, one of the main reasons is that our licenses are for a limited number of STATIC IP addresses. To allow wi-fi would possibly be a violation of this licensing agreement.

A further concern is the necessity of having filters on our computers, and how this would impact 'non-stationary' users.

Finally (well, not really, but for the purposes of this reply), is the issue of security. We operate on a secure server for our Computer lab, but are concerned about dowloads of viruses, worms, etc.


I would recommend further questions on this issue be directed to the Gadsden County Commission.

But I do thank both you and nikromatt for your comments.
