New hours at Main Library

You may have heard about it from the County Commission reports or seen it on the news:

The Main Library in Quincy (the William A. "Bill" McGill Library) will have new hours starting

TUESDAY, August 22, 2006.

The hours are:

Tuesday 10AM - 9PM
Wednesday 12Noon-9PM

Saturday 10AM - 9PM

In effect, the Library will open an hour later in the mornings, but stay open an hour later at night. We will still open at 12 noon on Wednesdays, however, we will be open later on Friday nights and Saturdays, as well as adding Sunday hours.

School starts August 14!

Hey, that's today!

We would like to remind all parents and teachers that the Library is here to help your child/student find a quiet place to study, and is a place where LOTS of information may be found on a wide variety of subjects. We have encyclopedias, large non-fiction sections for children of all ages; and we also have FREE access to the internet.

Several study areas have been set aside in the library with tables and chairs for students to get together to work on those big class projects.

We also have books to help with history fair and science fair projects.

Does this sound like a commercial? Well, it is! Come to the library for all your school project needs.

The Library Staff does ask that you keep a few things in mind:

As much as we'd like to, we do not have school supplies on hand to give or loan. This includes pens and pencils (although occasionally we do have a few), paper, posterboard, tape, glue, etc. Please make sure you bring what you need when you come to the Library.

Children under 13 MUST be accompanied by an adult when in the Library.
If your child is over 13, please make sure you know when we close, so you can pick up your child before closing time. (Our hours are about to change, we will be open until 9PM Monday through Saturday and Sunday 1-5 starting sometime in September.)

No food or drink (including candy, gum and/or water bottles) are allowed in the Library at any time.

Groups can get noisy. While we don't mind a little noise, there may be other people using the Library who request a quiet space to work. So please be considerate of others who also need to use the Library.

Patrons under 18 years old CANNOT use the computers without a parent's signed permission form on file with the Library. Please see the Library Staff to sign one of these forms.

The time limit on the Computers is one hour. If no one is waiting we usually don't enforce this as strictly. That said, please also remember that during the school year the library computer area can become busy with people using the internet for research. Please do not get upset if at the end of your hour, we ask you to give up the computer when there is a waiting list.

It costs five cents a page to print from the computers. This helps us pay for toner and paper for the printer. Please do not print something if you can't pay for it, or don't really want it.

We at the Library hope you will make us one of your first stops when it comes to research.

Book Donation Policy

I have been asked what our policy is on book donations, beyond the previous post:

Book Donations Policy:

The Library appreciates the gift of books and other materials. Such gifts make items available that the Library otherwise might not be able to provide. Gifts of books and other materials are accepted with the understanding that they may be retained, discarded and used at the discretion of the Library.

The Library cannot be responsible for transporting books or other materials to the Library.

The Library does not appraise books and materials. Donors should be informed of the conditions under which such items will be accepted.

Appraisals
Although the Library does not appraise books and materials, a letter from the Library acknowledging receipt of such donations and indicating quantities and types of donations will be supplied upon request.

Criteria for acceptance of book donations
Items must be in good condition.
Items must be suitable for the Library's collection.
Items must be given without condition.

The Library reserves the right to dispose of such gifts to its best advantage.
Such disposition may include:

  1. Retention in the main library, a branch library, or the bookmobile.
  2. Donation to other libraries
  3. Donation to local or other institutions or organizations
  4. Exchange with other institutions or organizations.
  5. Sale
  6. Discard or recycle.

I hope this helps answer any questions. If not, call the Library for more information.

Donations? Yes, please!

The question is often asked (sometimes daily): "Do you take donations?"
The answer is a resounding "YES, PLEASE!"

Donations are one way we find out about your interests. Sometimes we find out about authors or books on certain subjects that we may have missed when looking over 'books to purchase' for our collection. And if YOU like them, chances are that many others in the community will have an interest in them as well.

Donations are also a way we use to replace worn out copies on the shelves or lost or very overdue books . Books wear out, just like anything else that gets used a lot, and this way, with YOUR help, we can replace these well-loved copies with newer copies, and extend the shelf life of the book. When a book goes missing, we have to put that title on a list to buy in the future, if it is still in print. Your donation helps us extend our book buying budget just a bit further.

Donations help fill in gaps in our series or author selections of which we may not have noticed, or put on our 'wish list' for future purchases:

  • Recently, a kind person donated the first twenty-one books in the "Cat Who...." series by Lillian Jackson Braun for the Chattahoochee branch.
  • Another young reader donated her complete collection of the Thoroughbred and Saddle Club book series for the Havana Branch.
All of these sets were mint condition paperbacks and will see use for many years to come.

  • Another patron donated a grand set of about twenty Stephen King HARDCOVER books. These are extremely difficult to come by, and went immediately into our collection, distributed among all three branches.

Another question asked is "Do you prefer hardback or paperback books?"
The answer is that we use both in our collections. Due to space limitations and quality, we have fewer paperbacks in our libraries than their hardcover counterparts, but both have a place.

We like to see good condition hardcovers for both new and replacement copies mainly because the sturdier construction helps them last longer with repeated use than paperbacks.

Finally, we are asked "Can I choose which branch gets my donations?"
Yes, however, if a branch already has a copy of a book in good condition, we do reserve the right to re-direct the book where it is needed the most.

An alternative is that if you wish to give a "Memorial Copy" of a book to a branch, we will simply re-direct the current copy to give your gift a prominent place at that branch. (For more information about "Memorial Copies" please call Ricki at the main library.)

We also accept donations of VHS and DVD videos, and audio books on both cassette and CD (in playable condition, of course.)

So, thank you for all your book donations to the Gadsden County Public Library System. We really do appreciate them and highly value your contribution.
