SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT

QUINCY - "It is a great day for Gadsden County," said Jane Mock, director of the Gadsden County Public Library System, as she prepared for next week's dedication and grand opening.

The Gadsden County William "Bill" McGill Public Library, 732 Pat Thomas Parkway, is the county's main library. Its grand opening is set for noon Tuesday, and Mock said she expects quite a crowd.

"This is the people's library," she said, "and we are thrilled at how many people have come here already and used these facilities.

"We have a wonderful collection of new books, and so far it seems as though the verdict is unanimous: People just love our new library."

The event is being presented by the county commissioners, the Gadsden County Library Commission and the Friends of the Gadsden County Public Library.

The new library opened May 15 and has a number of additions - including expanded computer rooms, with one for adults and the other for youths. She noted that the 29 computers always seem to be in use.

There are private study areas, a revamped area for children and expanded Saturday hours - from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bill McGill, after whom the library is named, was a county commissioner for 12 years and served as chairman until six weeks before he lost his battle with cancer in February 2004. McGill always had a special place in his heart for reading and libraries. "He really worked hard on this project," said his widow, Mary McGill. "One of the last things he spoke about was this library."

The previous library had been in the W.A. Woodham Justice Center since the 1980s. It closed permanently April 13.

For a tour of the library, please call Mock at (850) 875-8675 or (850) 627-7106.
